Malang, E.Java (Antara) - Students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP) are conducting a field study program in Batu, East Java Province, to create new technologies to improve the business productivity of the local people in the city.
The program called Learning Express (LEx) is fully funded by the Tamasek Foundation and is managed by the International Relations Office (IRO) of UMM. "This program is being held from Sept 12-27, 2017," UMM LEx Coordinator Karina Sari said here, Thursday.
This program, in which 34 UMM students and 31 SP students are participating, is a community service program and has been held by the two higher education institutions for seven years. The program is held twice a year in March and September, focusing on different technology projects.
In September batch, there are three projects, namely banana production, fried onion production, and traditional herbal medicine production. The students have a mission to create new technology in the three projects, Karina remarked.
Earlier, the UMM students participated in a design-thinking training in Singapore.
The three projects will become the means to apply all the materials that they have learned during their stay in Singapore. The students are expected to create tools that will aid the locals in increasing their business production.
In the previous LEx project, Karina noted, UMM-SP's student collaboration produced a prototype dryer to speed up miniature truck production in Temas Village, Batu City. (*)
