Guiyang, Guizhou, China, June 19 (Antara) - The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considered Indonesian government has been conducting optimal efforts to handle various environmental issues, including forest fires in some areas.

"I see your country has done maximum efforts to deal with it," IUCN President, Zhang Xinsheng told Antara in the sidelines of the Eco Forum Global Symposium in Guizhou province on Monday.

The former Chairman of UNESCO's Executive Council also advised Indonesian government to educate people living surrounding the forests to raise community concern on environmental issues.

Zhang has been very concerned on the condition of the forests in Indonesia as part of the world's lung that require maximum care.

Therefore, IUCN had chose Indonesia as a location to hold a high-level meeting of the Asian region on forest restoration and Bonn's challenge.

The meeting that discussed global efforts to overcome forest destruction was held in Palembang, South Sumatra on last May.

Seeing Indonesia as a country whose central and regional governments committed to deal with environmental damages, the union is ready to cooperate with Indonesian government in addressing environmental degradation.

"Of course we are ready to support it because we see Indonesia is very important," Zhang said.

The IUCN, founded in 1948, is one of the world's largest organizations providing environmental conservation data, assessment and analysis.

IUCN membership is unique because it consists of government agencies and civil society organizations as well as businesspeople.

The organization, headquartered in Switzerland, oversees 1,300 institutions and 16,000 environmental experts worldwide.

"Next year we will specifically invite the Indonesian government to attend this annual EFG event in Guiyang," Zhang added.(*)
