London, (Antara) - Indonesia wants to promote cooperation with the Organization of Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) especially in capacity building for National Authority toward implementation of the Chemical Weapon Convention, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said.
On Monday, Retno met OPCW Director General Ahmet Üzümcü in the Hague, and expressed appreciation for the cooperation so far between Indonesia and OPCW.
She expressed the hope that the cooperation would be effective in supporting the program for national authority capacity building such as in improvement of laboratory quality, participation of experts and researchers from Indonesia in the training program held by OPCW.
Indonesia has always shown strong commitment to Chemical Weapon Convention, Minister Counselor at Indonesian embassy in The Hague Ourina Ritonga quoted the minister as saying. Indonesia has regularly conveyed its annual declaration and supported inspection visits 16 times by OPCW to a number of chemical factories in Indonesia.
In the past three years a team of OPCW made five inspection visits to five five manufacturing companies in Indonesia.
Indonesia and OPCW plan to hold the second table top exercise in Bali from May 23 to 25 to provide training in increasing state capacity in Chemical Weapon Convention especially in Asia - Pacific in facing possible attacks with weapon chemicals and leaks of dangerous chemical substances.
In order to strengthen the cooperation, Ahmet Üzümcü is to visit Jakarta late July. Ahmet Üzümcü would meet with Indonesian leaders including Retno and the Industry Minister and ASEAN secretary general.
OPCW appreciated the Indonesian contribution to call for disarmament and non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons including chemical weapons.
"This showed strong commitment of Indonesia to creating and maintaining world peace," Ahmet said.(*)
