Sembalun, W Nusa Tenggara, (Antara) - Indonesian runner Fandhi Achmad successfully won the 100-km category of the 2017 Rinjani 100 Trail marathon on Sunday but failed to reach the finish line faster than he did in 2016.

Fandhi finished the route in 33 hours, 11 minutes and 55 seconds. The record in the category is 26 hours and 35 minutes held by Jan Nilsen from Norwegia.

"My target was actually breaking Nelson's record but a day before I was still ill. Even before the race started I still had a diarhea and was still weak. So I changed the target into just reaching the finish line, he said after the race.

Fandhi, who is 34 years old, beat 38 other runners from various countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, France, Britain and Japan.

Chinese runner Dongxi Tang finished second clocking 33 hours, 53 minutes and 25 seconds while Emmanuel Abadie from France finished third after running 34 hours, 37 minutes And 38 seconds.

Fandhi is not a new comer.  He participated in Rinjani 100 after holding two champion titles from Gede Pangrango Ultra Trail in the 100km category in 2014 and 2016.

In Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) in Europe in 2015 he completed the 170-km route in 40 hours, 45 minutes and 40 seconds.

After participating in Rinjani 100 Fandhi who hails from Jakarta will again take part in UMBT in August this year not in the 170-km category but in the 300-km category known as Petite Trotte a Leon (PTL).

"With all his records Fandhi as we have predicted will come out as a champion in Rinjani 100," race official I Nyoman Suka Ada said.

Rinjani 100 as an international cross country run was participated in by 502 runners from 28 countries.

It offered 27-km, 36-km, 60-km and 100-km categories. The 100-km category which was the main category began at 23.30 hours on Friday from Senaru through Segara Anakan to the peak of Mount Rinjani before finishing in Sembalun.

The organizer set the time to finish the 100-km category route at within 36 hours. Total passes that runners had to deal with reach 9.16 kilometers in addition to various contours and cold and wet weather in compensation for the beautiful sceneries in Rinjani.

"Based on my experience the Rinjani route is the best trail in Indonesia," Fandhi Achmad said.(*)
