Jakarta, (Antara) - Some delegates of the United Nations Human Rights Council's (UNHRC's) Universal Periodic Review (UPR) have praised Indonesia for the progress achieved in the promotion and protection of human rights, the Foreign Ministry stated on Thursday.

"We warmly welcome Indonesia's human rights report and laud the progress it has made in the field of human rights, particularly with regard to the ratification of various international conventions related to human rights. We encourage Indonesia to continue to increase its achievements in the promotion and protection of human rights," the ministry quoted the delegates as saying during the discussion of Indonesia's human rights report under the mechanism of UPR in Geneva on Wednesday (May 3).

The UNHRC's UPR working group completed the discussion on Indonesia's human rights report on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi and Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly led the Indonesian delegation at the meeting.

"After holding a dialog for three and a half hours with delegates from 103 countries, we received a strong signal that the delegates had praised (Indonesia) for its progress, efforts, and commitment to address challenges in the promotion and protection of human rights at the national and regional levels as well as Indonesia's pioneer (role) at the regional and global levels," Marsudi noted.

This gesture reflects support and offers new impetus to the promotion and protection of human rights in Indonesia, particularly under the leadership of President Joko Widodo, to continue to make progress in the field of human rights, Marsudi remarked.

"Several recommendations that Indonesia had received in 2012 have been formulated into 13 clusters in our UPR report, ranging from the ratification of convention on international human rights to Indonesia's development policies that underlines the implementation of development, starting from the border areas," she added.(*)
