Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara (Antara) - Floods have hit five districts in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, following incessant heavy rains that caused several rivers to overflow their banks since Tuesday evening.

Relief aid was distributed to flood victims in the districts, Mohammad Rum, head of the NTB disaster mitigation office, stated here, Wednesday.

"This morning, I am in Kuta, Pujut Sub-district, Central Lombok District, to distribute aid," he said, adding that some 500 people were affected by flooding in the village.

In the villages of Cendimanik and Central Sekotong in Jerowaru Sub-district, East Lombok District, residential areas, government offices, and a community health center were flooded following torrential rains since Tuesday evening.

Some 920 villagers were affected by the flooding in Cendimanik, while in Central Sekotong, several inhabitants took refuge in mosques.

In West Sumbawa District, several villages in the Taliwang Sub-district were also submerged by floods.

The villages of Naru, Nisa, Waduwani, Talabiu, Penapali, Tenga, and Tente in Woha Sub-district, Bima District, were also flooded.

The local authorities have set up flood emergency command posts to deal with the impacts of the natural disaster.

In December 2016, major floods inundated five sub-districts and their 33 villages in Bima, NTB, displacing more than 105,753 residents.

Estimated losses amounting to US$74 million (Rp1 trillion) were incurred due to the flooding in Bima, with extensive damage to the region's farmlands, homes, offices, schools, hospitals, and other buildings.

Indonesia bore the brunt of 2,342 natural disasters in 2016, the highest in the past 14 years, making it one of the most violent years in recent memory.

Data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency indicated that the number of natural disasters had increased by 35 percent in 2016, from 1,732 in the previous year, with dangers of flooding, landslides, and whirlwinds still looming large.(*)
