Surabaya, E Java, (Antara) - East Java's exports of shrimp is increasing on growing demand in international market, says the Association of Fishery Product Processing and Marketing Companies (AP5I).
APSI chairman Johan Suryadarma said in 2014, East Java's exports of shrimps were recorded only at 103,000 tons in 2014, up to 114,000 tons in 2015.
In the first half of 2016, the export volume already reached 220,000 tons, Johan said here on Tuesday.
"We always monitor the market trend abroad about demand and supply that we could respond to the market requirement, Johan said.
He said the main country of destination for shrimps from East Java is the United States, followed by Europe and Japan.
"Currently shrimp requirement in Japan began to decline as a result of nuclear disaster there a number of years earlier," he said.
In East Java, the areas still producing vaname shrimps include Sidoarjo and Banyuwangi.
He said heavy downpour and flooding had damaged many shrimp ponds resulting in a decline in production especially vaname shrimp production in East Java.
He said 20 to 30 percent of shrimp ponds are damaged by flooding and heavy rains in the province.
"Vaname shrimps are especially sensitive that it is necessary to keep the sanitation from the first day of breeding until harvest time," he said. (*)
