Bandung, W Java, (Antara) - An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted Subang district in West Java province at 7:25 am local time on Wednesday.
The National Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on its Twitter account @infoBMKG stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located some 120 kilometer northeast of Subang district at a depth of 650 kilometers.
It said the earthquake was strong enough and its magnitude was also felt by the people in Yogyakarta.
Indonesia's more than 17 thousand islands are scattered along a belt of volcanic and seismic activity known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire", and that, the area is one of the most quake-prone places on earth.
Earlier before dawn on Friday, an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale also shook Talaud Islands in North Sulawesi, according to local BMKG.
The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 04:18 a.m. local time was located 34 km northwest of Talaud Islands or 347 km northeast of the provincial capital Manado at a depth of 46 km, the agency said on its official website.
The earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, it said.(*)
