Rio de Janeiro, (Antara) - Indonesia through its shuttlers grabbed the mixed double Olympic gold medal in the badminton branch on the 12th day of the Olympic Games here on Wednesday.

The gold medal was won by Indonesia's mixed doubles players Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, lifting the Indonesian position in the medal tally  from rank 56 to 39.

Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir defeated Malaysia's Chan Peng/Goh Liu Ying 21-14, 21-12 in the finals.

Earlier, Indonesia won two silver medals through its weightlifters.

Until Wednesday evening, Indonesia has won one gold and two silver medals in the Olympic Games now on-going in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Indonesia's position increased sharply over the other ASEAN countries, namely Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Singapore but it is still below the position of Thailand which has grabbed two gold medals.(*)
