Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - While addressing the third session of the Preparatory Committee (Prepcom) of the Habitat III Conference here Tuesday, Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini spoke about the management of clean kampongs in the city.

She spoke of several successes achieved by the Surabaya city government since she took office in 2010. To deal with urban garbage issues, she applied a garbage management program under a ''reduce, reuse and recycle'' scheme.

"By doing so, the urban environment particularly in kampongs has increasingly become clean and comfortable. The public now understands how to manage clean kampongs," she said.

The volume of garbage produced by households, industries and offices in the city has declined every year, the former chief of the Surabaya City Development Planning Agency (Bappeko) said.

"Every year, the volume of garbage declines by 10 percent," she said.

During the early days of her administration the volume of garbage from the public reached 3,000 tons per day, but the figure has fallen to 1,400 tons per day now, she recalled.

The city residents have also been successful in managing household waste water, the mayor further said. "The waste water is currently being used to water plants and wash vehicles," she said.
