Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - The third session of the preparatory committee of the Habitat III Conference (Prepcom III) is a momentum for countries to learn from Surabaya to develop ideal cities, a minister said.

"Let us learn from and be inspired by Surabaya and Indonesia to realize the agenda of developing ideal cities in 20 years' time," Indonesian Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono said during the welcoming ceremony of the Prepcom Habitat III at the plenary room of Grand City here Monday.

Indonesia has committed itself to make the new agenda of urban areas, which is the outcome of the Habitat III, a reference of urban development and settlement by launching a 100-0-100 program, which means 100 percent is good sanitation, 0 percent is slum and 100 percent is healthy drinking water by 2019, Basuki said.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of Habitat III Joan Clos said he was proud of Surabaya, which has successfully become a comfortable city for its residents.

"Surabaya represents a friendly city. Learn from Surabaya where a crocodile and shark can live in peace. Thank you for organizing this conference and see you in Quito," he said.

Habitat III is the UN agenda organized every 20 years to ensure joint commitment towards sustainable urban development. This session will be held in Quito, Ecuador, from October 17 to 20, 2016. The Habitat I was held in Vancouver, Canada, from May 31 to June 11, 1976, to discuss a livable settlement for all.

The Habitat II was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from June 3 to 14, 1996, to discuss efforts to improve the quality of life in urban areas and to build awareness of the importance of sustainable settlement for urban areas in the future.

Preparations for and consultations on the Habitat III were made more comprehensively in the past couple of years through various meetings including PrepCom 1 held in New York, and PrepCom 2  held in Nairobi.

As part of the preparations for the PrepCom3, the event's organizing committee held roadshows in eight cities from April to June 2016. The cities were Semarang (April 28), Denpasar (May 10), Yogyakarta (May 17), and Solo (May 24), in addition to Pelambang (June 1), Makassar (June 8), Bandung (June 15), and Jakarta (June 23). (*)
