Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - The Surabaya city legislative council (DPRD) has asked the city government to cooperate with the police in conducting raids on warehouses
suspected of being used for hoarding basic commodities during the fasting month.

The raid is aimed to check whether the warehouses are being used to hoard basic necessities, secretary of the legislative council's
commission B for economic affairs, Edi Rachmat, said here on Wednesday.

"The city government can carry out the raid by teaming up with the police," he stated.

He reasoned that the prices of basic necessities have been soaring due to high demand and falling supplies during the
fasting month. He alleged that a shortage of basic commodities and the
consequent hike in prices could be the result of hoarding.

"Stocks are intentionally hoarded to cut down supplies to a bare minimum for the consumers," he explained.

He doubted if the bazaars organized by the city government at 10 different places till three days before Ied al-Fitr festivities
will yield optimum results.

"Of course, the bazaars will not be able to cover all parts of Surabaya, so the results cannot be very satisfactory," he argued. (*)
