Six Expatriates Deported from Surabaya

Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - The Surabaya city government has deported six Chinese and South Korean workers since early this year for working illegally in the country.

"Some of the expatriates worked as teachers in a school in Citra Land Housing Complex, while others were found working at the restaurant of a hotel here," Head of the Surabaya City National Unity and Community Protection Agency (Bakesbanglinmas) Soemarno said here on Wednesday.

In addition, their visas had also expired, he said.

He said a team of officers from the immigration office, the police and the regional apparatuses working unit (SKPD) routinely conducted raids targeting expatriates, foreign non-governmental

organization activists and foreign volunteers.

In fact, during the past few days, the team has been focusing on a foreign street singer in Bungkul Park.

"When we conducted a raid in Bungkul Park, the foreign national managed to run away. So we do not know about his nationality or his place of stay in Surabaya," he said.

He said the team also found a Dutch national selling sweet potato.

"The foreign national who married a Surabaya resident no longer sells sweet potato. His visa is still valid and therefore, he was allowed to stay here," he said.  (*)
