Banda Aceh, Aceh Darussalam, Dec 13 (Antara)- Vice President M Jusuf Kalla left for Aceh Darussalam Province to attend the commemoration of the Nusantara (Archipelago) Day 2015.

Kalla and his entourage departed from the Halim Perdanakusuma air force base, East Jakarta, on Sunday.

Members of his entourage include Research, Technology and Higher Education Minister M Nasir, Agrarian and Spatial  Planning Minister Ferry Mursyidan Baldan, National Development Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil, and Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.

Kalla was greeted by Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah at the Sultan Iskandar Muda air force base in Banda Aceh.

Also present in the function were Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said and Maritime Affairs and Fishery Minister Suri Pudjiastuti.

The event was highlighted with among other things the launch of Cheng Ho Ocean Route and a placard signing by Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.

The Nusantara Day was based on the Djuanda Declaration of Dec. 13, 1957 which marked the beginning of Indonesia being acknowledged as an archipelagic state.

The declaration, named after Prime Minister Djuanda Kartawidjaja, states that waters between Indonesian islands should also be regarded as Indonesian territorial waters instead of the traditional 12-mile delimitation.

In 1982, the principle was then internationally acknowledged through the United Nations Convention on The Law of The Sea (UNCLOS).

The Nusantara Day, which was introduced by the then president Soeharto, is observed every December 13.(*)
