Jakarta, (Antara) - The 70th anniversary of Indonesia's independence should serve as a momentum to strengthen the nation's defense forces in order to garner the respect of other countries, according to a legislator.

According to Sukamta, a strong Indonesia does not intend to be a threat to other nations but to improve its own welfare in order to be respected by others.

He further emphasized that Indonesia should be a strong country in its contributions to maintaining world peace as mandated in the 1945 Constitution.

The member of the House's Commission I further noted that through the spirit of independence, Indonesia should continue to increase its power index.

Sukamta stated that according to the Global Fire Power Military in 2015, Indonesia is ranked 12th, with a Power Index of 0.5231.

Therefore, he expressed hope that in 2016, the power index value can be raised to make Indonesia one of the top 10 military powers in the world, and in 2024, the country aims to rank among the top five.(*)
