Langkat, N Sumatra (Antara)- Twelve fishermen from East Sei Bilah village, Sei Lepan sub-district, Langkat District, have been detained by Malaysian maritime police while fishing in a maritime border area between the two countries.

"There are 12 fishermen from Langkat currently being detained by Malaysia's police," Chairman of the Indonesian Traditional Fishermen's Association of the Langkat chapter, Tajruddin Hasibuan, said here, Sunday.

The 12 traditional fishermen were detained on Friday (July 24) at 1.30 pm local time, when fishing in an area located 51 miles from Langkat District waters.

"They believe that they were fishing in Indonesian waters," he said.

One of the fishermen contacted his wife and informed her that they were being arrested by Malaysia's police and taken to Kwala Penang.

They were forced to sign documents that they were not allowed to read the contents.

The Indonesian fishermen asked the Malaysian maritime police to inform the Indonesian consulate general in Penang about the arrest, but their request was denied by the police. (*)
