Jakarta (Antara) - The Democrat faction asks the Parliament to postpone fit and proper test for the candidate for new police chief over legal status of the candidate. On Tuesday, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) declared a graft suspect Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, who has been picked by President Joko Widodo as the sole candidate to replace outgoing police chief Gen. Sutarman. The announcement by KPK came with a big bang a day before Budi Gunawan was to face the standard procedure of fit and proper test by the Commission III of the Parliament on Wednesday. "We believe it would be better to put off the fit and proper test and see how President Joko Widodo would do about it as the Parliament still has much time for it," Didik Mukrinato, secretary of the Democrat faction said here on Wednesday. The Parliament has 20 days to give its approval or rejection after receiving the letter proposing Budi Gunawan as new police chief from the president, Didik pointed out. Meanwhile, nine other factions in the parliament decided to go ahead with the agenda of fit and proper test on Wednesday despite the KPK declaring the candidate a corruption suspect. Didik, who is a member of the Commission III, which will conduct the fit and proper test, said the parliament leaders should consult with President Jokowi before deciding to go ahead with the procedure. He said the president should make clear his position after Budi Gunawan has been named a graft suspect by KPK. "The event could create a public polemic if the process continued in the Parliament," he said. (*)
