Nunukan, North Kalimantan (Antara) - Twenty five schools in two sub-districts in Nunukan District, North Kalimantan Province, were temporarily closed down due to flash floods from Malaysia. Flash floods have inundated Lumbi Sub-district since January 22, forcing the temporary closure of some schools, Head of Lumbis Sub-district Muh Efendi stated on Monday. Four schools, located in Kalampising, Beringin, Patal and Mansalong villages respectively, were inundated and amenities therein, such as chairs, tables and text books were damaged by the floods, he noted. The Lumbis education office was also flooded, he added. In Sembakung Sub-district, 21 schools, including one senior high school and four junior high schools, were flooded, Abdul Rajab, a local teacher pointed out. The 21 flood-affected schools are located across 13 villages. They were flooded with water up to 1.5 meters deep. Meanwhile, thousands of houses in the sub-district of Sembakung, Nunukan, North Kalimantan, have been inundated by floods flowing from neighboring Malaysia, Sub-district Head of Sembakung Iskandar revealed recently. He added that 13 out of 20 villages in the sub-district have been submerged because of the floods as well as high rainfall in the past few days, with as many as 8.5 thousand families being affected. He added that the flood water reached the floor of the homes in the villages with mostly traditional platform houses. "The water level is estimated to have reached a height of five to 5.15 meters, down by 20 centimeters, from the initial level," he explained when contacted over phone for information about the flooding. He pointed out that 80 percent of the 11 thousand houses and public facilities in the sub-district were still under water. (*)
