Cianjur, W Java (Antara) - Incessant, heavy rains triggered a landslide in the Cijedil Village, burying a highway connecting the Puncak area to the Cianjur District of West Java, with up to 6 meters of rubble. The landslide caused massive traffic snarls stretching up to tens of kilometers, from Cianjur to Puncak and vice versa. The downpour caused an eight-meter-high cliff to collapse and buried the highway up to six meters in debris. Hundreds of security officers, along with the local people, worked together to remove the huge rocks, debris, and uprooted bamboo trees that covered the highway. "Heavy machinery was also used to clear the highway. The officers and people worked in tandem to remove the eroded soil and piled the debris along the roadside," stated Cugenang Sector Police Chief Commissioner Undang here on Thursday. He noted that the cleanup effort resulted in a traffic jam that lasted several hours, as the officers removed the landslide debris. By implementing the open-close way system, the vehicular traffic was able to move on the highway, after two hours of cleanup efforts. The traffic jam on the highway continued all afternoon, despite the system being implemented. The Cianjur Police has advised the people to be vigilant of subsequent landslides, particularly when heavy rains occur between the Puncak and Cianjur areas. (*)
