Pamekasan, East Java (Antara) - Whirlwinds have hit two districts in Madura Island, East Java and damaged dozens of residences. Head of Pamekasan Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Budi Irianto stated here on Tuesday that Pamekasan and Sampang were both hit by the whirlwind. "The whirlwind hit three villages, Lenteng, Pangbatok and Badung, of Proppo Subdistrict, Pamekasan District on Monday night (Jan. 13). Dozens of houses were damaged and some of them were devastated," Budi Irianto confirmed. The whirlwind also damaged an Islamic Boarding School in Proppo Subdistrict. Some trees were uprooted and the electric supply was also cut off due to the strong wind. However, the power supply has been restored on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. local time. The whirlwind also affected villages in the Omben Subdistrict of Sampang District. Dozens of houses were reported to have been damaged but there have been no fatalities, Irianto noted. Local residents have come together to remove the debris and repair damaged properties. The Agency and the authority are still gathering data to estimate the material loss due to the disaster.
