Jakarta (Antara) - Total air passengers in Indonesia are forecast to increase by 10 percent during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays this year. "There will certainly be a hike in the number of air passengers. Last year, it was around 13 percent, but this year it is predicted to be 10 percent," the country's Director General of Air Transportation, Harry Bakti Gumay, stated here on Monday. He said the total hike was attributed to a five percent increase in domestic passengers and a 9.32 percent increase in overseas passengers. For 2013, Harry added that a significant increase in passengers can be handled as air transportation capacity in the country is still quite large, in addition to having extra flights. Based on the transport ministry's data, the additional flight capacity for various domestic destinations is estimated at 93,364 seats. "Extra flights usually operate at night and will not disrupt the existing flight schedules," he said. Harry noted that the extra flights were subject to the same regulations that applied to regular flights, which include safety and security regulations, apart from airport preparations for arrivals and departures. "Before any departure, a confirmation will be made to assure that the destination airport is ready to accommodate the flight," he added. (*)
