Jakarta (Antara) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered his cabinet ministers to not respond to political issues but to focus on safeguarding the country's economy. He made this remark on Tuesday while leading a plenary cabinet meeting on the economy. "I urge you to not respond to political issues but to focus on overcoming this problem (economy). Just focus on safeguarding our economy. Focus on our development as this is what people are expecting," he said. He added that if they paid more attention to political issues, they could lose their focus, with the possibility of making mistakes. "We must solve the problem. God willing, the results will be positive," he said. President Yudhoyono pledged that he would explain the real situation to the public if rumours go beyond the government¿s control. As an example, he referred to the rumour about food supplies. "We have a surplus of food supplies. And we export additional food supplies. Some food commodities are indeed in minimum supply, not a shortage but enough to meet domestic needs. There is a shortage of other commodities but we have always faced that situation because of international price hikes. All these situations can be explained," he said. He added that these issues will be solved in due course; it would be better for the government to focus on its work and policies. President Yudhoyono, on the occasion, said he keeps himself abreast of Indonesia¿s economic development. He said certain parties understand economic plights but others deliberately spread rumours about Indonesia¿s economy. "It is understandable since we will be having legislative and presidential elections next year; so, some may politicise every issue in the country," he said. The meeting was attended by Vice President Boediono, and a discussion was held on the implementation of economic policies issued recently. (*)
