Indonesia’s Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa urged the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) to fully optimize its role in protecting the domestic market and industries from illegal foreign goods.

While inducting echelon II officials at the Ministry of Finance in Jakarta on Wednesday (Jan. 28), he warned that an influx of illegally imported goods into the domestic market could hinder the growth of national businesses.

"If the domestic market is flooded with illegal goods, our companies at home will find it difficult to compete on a level playing field," Purbaya emphasized.

On that note, he reminded DJBC officials that they are tasked with spearheading the government’s efforts to sustain the growth of the domestic market, warning that weak oversight could lead to an underwhelming flow of state revenue.

"Inability to protect the market will result in a decline in excise and tax revenue, ultimately causing significant losses for all," the minister said, noting that the government faces limited fiscal space as the 2025 state revenue target was not achieved.

He stressed that intensifying measures to safeguard the market and optimize state revenue is also crucial to further bolster Indonesia’s economic growth—currently hovering at a favorable rate of around five percent—and to maximize employment absorption among the productive-age workforce.

Furthermore, the state treasurer vowed that the Ministry of Finance would tighten supervision of the DJBC following the appointment of new high-ranking officials, aiming to curb misconduct that could undermine the domestic market.

"I will carry out restructuring again if the new officials perform poorly," Purbaya stressed.

He reiterated the importance of all DJBC officials working harder to ensure optimal state revenue from customs and excise.

At Wednesday's event, Purbaya inaugurated 36 echelon II officials at the ministry’s DJBC, Directorate General of State Assets, Directorate General of Treasury, and Directorate General of Financial Sector Stability and Development
