The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has received its newest frigate, KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, from shipbuilder Fincantieri during the handover ceremony in Muggiano, Italy, on Monday (December 22) local time.

According to Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, who represented the Navy in the ceremony, the new frigate is part of the Navy's mission to modernize its defence equipment.

"Modernizing the defence equipment sustainably reflected our commitment to preserving Indonesia's maritime security and sovereignty," Admiral Ali stated in his written remarks here on Tuesday.

During the handover ceremony, Ali also inducted Colonel Kurniawan Koes Atmadja as the inaugural commander of KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321.

The ship will soon begin its voyage to Indonesia and is expected to arrive in January 2026, according to the statement.

KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 has nearly identical specifications to KRI Brawijaya-321, which has been part of Naval Fleet Command II since arriving in Indonesia in September.

Both frigates are equipped with a 127-millimeter main gun, a 25-millimeter close-in weapon system, anti-submarine torpedoes, and electronic missile systems.

The two Fincantieri-built frigates form part of Indonesia’s broader naval modernization program aimed at strengthening maritime defense and maintaining security across the archipelago’s vast waters.

Last September, the Navy Chief of Staff said the Ministry of Defense spent US$1.25 billion to procure the two frigates from Fincantieri.
