Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - The US government states Indonesian seaports and their facilities meet the standards of the International Port Security for 2012. In a press statement received by ANTARA here on Tuesday from the US Consulate General it stated the decision was made based on implementation of effective security measures by the Indonesian government in a number of ports. The achievement would reduce delays and improved trade facilities for Indonesian ships coming to the US. International shipping has played an important role for economic development in the two countries while most export and import activities are affected by maritime transportation. Therefore, security and safety in shipping and in international ports have been given special attention by all countries. In 2011 more than 200 ships from Indonesia were required to undergo additional security checks when berthing in the US in line with the international security standards. With the Indonesian government's achievement in improving the country's port security shipment of products such as rubber, wood, coal, oil and heavy equipment to the US would no long undergo suspension. The cooperation in the field of security is one of the components in the UN-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership launched by President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono and President Barack Obama. In the framework of supporting Indonesia in its efforts to improve security activities at ports the US government has extended assistance in the form of training and equipment worth more than US$3 milion in the past few years.
