Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The police chief of Poso Pesisir Utata sub-district, Adjunct Commissioner Nicklas Karauwan, survived attacks by unknown gunmen here on Thursday. "Four shots were fired and the police chief ducked to save himself," the police chief of Poso District, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Eko Santoso said when contacted for confirmation of the incident from Palu, Central Sulawesi. He said the attack took place at around 12.15pm local time while the sub-district police chief was walking out of his house to take the key of his motorcycle in the yard. Upon hearing the shots he ducked and ran back to the house to get a gun. "A member shot back to the attackers but they fled," he added. The attackers fled to the plantations belonging to local villagers located around the official home of the police chief, he said. The police is still investigating the case and have discovered a projectile on the scene, he said. He said he did not know yet the type of the guns used by the attackers adding "we still have yet to investigate it." However he believed the attackers were part of the group that has so far been conducting terror attacks in the district of Poso. "Who else dares shoot police officers if they are not terrorists," he said. He said the police are stepping up security around the house of the Poso Pesisir Utara police chief to anticipate possible repeat attacks. Adjunct Commissioner Nicklas Karauwan has been active accompanying Densus 88 anti-terrorist and military (TNI) squads in their operations to eradicate terrorists hiding in the region including during the raid to the house of a terrorist suspect on November 3, 2012. "Perhaps he has become the target of the terrorists and therefore we have increased alertness," Eko said. The TNI and the police recently combed the Hutan Biru forest area in Tamanjeka hamlet believed to be the terrorists' den and location of a terrorist training camp. During the operation they have discovered a number of booby traps, firearms, axes and other equipment believed to belong to the terrorist group.(*)
