Bojonegoro, E Java - The Bojonegoro agriculture office said it is optimistic the district rice production target of 700,000 tons would be achieved this year despite the long drought.
"The dry season has no much adversary effects on rise production in Bojonegoro," Subekti, head of the agriculture office, said on Friday.
Rice production in the East Java's district area already reached 504,000 tons in the first seven months of the year, Subekti said.
He acknowledged there was harvest failure in a number of village areas in the sub-districts of Sumberrejo and Kapas, but only a small part of the rice fields was hit by the crop failure.
"Only around ten hectares of the rice fields in those area failing to turn out yield," he said.
Farmers were already told to grow soy bean instead of rice as the drought has been predicted, he said, adding soybean is more resistant to dry season.
However, the shortfall in production from the drought hit areas was more than offset by a surplus from other areas such as in the sub-districts of Kanor, Kalitidu, and Dander, which have 4,080 hectares of rice fields, he added.
"Rice production in this district is quite encouraging despite the long drought reaching 6.5-7 tons per hectare," he said. (*)
