The UN Special Envoy on Water Retno Marsudi highlighted three approaches to address global water issues.

"I call it Triple A: Advocacy, Align, and Accelerate," Marsudi stated at the 40th UN-Water Meeting in New York on Monday (Nov 4), according to a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

She emphasized that advocacy with related stakeholders will ensure that political commitments are realized in concrete action.

"Advocacy is very much needed to ensure that water becomes the highest political agenda," the former Indonesian foreign minister noted.

Marsudi affirmed that advancing alignment is also important to ensure that stakeholders and other involved parties are interconnected in working towards shared goals on water-related matters, especially the comprehensive implementation of the UN Strategy for Water and Sanitation.

She further highlighted the urgent need for the UN system to accelerate the implementation of tasks in the field of water and sanitation and avoid a "business as usual" approach in critical conditions.

These three steps are important as Marsudi believes efforts to address global water issues are currently affected by two major obstacles: limited resources and time.

In addition, the world faces numerous deadlines in resolving global water issues, including the UN 2026 Water Conference, the final stage of the 2028 Water Action Decade, as well as the target achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The UN-Water Meeting, which is a coordination mechanism for all UN agencies on water issues, is held biennially.

This year, the meeting was held on November 4-5 and was attended by 130 participants from all UN-Water members and partners.

Marsudi's participation in the UN-Water meeting marked her first assignment as the UN Special Envoy on Water since officially starting her mandate on November 1, 2024.
