Members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) elected for the 2024-2029 term have been inaugurated following the oath-taking of legislators serving in the House of Representatives (DPR) and senators in the Regional Representatives Council (DPD).
The inauguration, taking place at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, finds its basis in Presidential Decree No. 115/P/2024 concerning the appointment of DPR, DPD, and MPR members for the 2024-2029 period, signed on September 30, 2024.
"This presidential decree starts taking effect after the oath-taking of members of the House of Representatives, Regional Legislative Council, and People's Consultative Assembly for the 2024-2029 period," Acting MPR Secretary-General Siti Fauziah stated.
The new MPR structure comprises 732 people, including 580 lawmakers serving at the DPR and 152 senators at the DPD.
Guntur Sasono, the oldest legislator serving as the interim MPR speaker, presided over the inauguration in the company of his interim deputy speaker and the youngest senator, Larasati Moriska.
President Joko Widodo, Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto, and Chief of the National Police (Polri) General Listyo Sigit Prabowo attended the inauguration and oath-taking processes.
The oath-taking was guided by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (MA) M. Syarifuddin.
In comparison with the previous legislative period, the current number of DPR members has increased from 575, while that of DPD members has increased from 136.
The newly inaugurated officials earned their place after emerging victorious in the 2024 General Elections on February 14, 2024.
The current structure of the DPR comprises representatives of several political parties: Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Golkar Party, Gerindra Party, National Awakening Party (PKB), NasDem Party, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Democratic Party, and National Mandate Party (PAN).
Meanwhile, senators at the DPD ran for the elections as independent candidates.
