The Ministry of Law and Human Rights encouraged first-time voters to participate in the 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) by holding a special declaration event for them.
The declaration involved student representatives from 26 high schools. Some attended in person, while others joined online.
At the event held in Jakarta on Wednesday, Minister of Law and Human Rights Supratman Andi Agtas emphasized that first-time voters have a significant responsibility in shaping Indonesia's future.
He stated that every vote is crucial in creating better policies for the country.
"First-time voters not only have the right to vote, but they also have the responsibility to exercise that right wisely," Agtas told the participants. "You must understand that each vote you cast is a reflection of your hopes and aspirations for the future."
Agtas urged first-time voters, aged 17 to 19, to actively participate in the elections and to use their voting rights thoughtfully.
"We need a young generation of voters who are not only smart but also committed to safeguarding diversity and harmony. You should become 'democracy fighters' with integrity," he remarked.
Agtas also reminded everyone that every citizen has the right to take part in the electoral process and to cast their vote based on principles of equality, freedom, honesty, and fairness.
"The right to vote is not just a formality; it is the essence of democracy, providing space for all citizens to participate equally," he concluded.
