President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called for improved health and security protocols during the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) in Nusa Dua, Bali, on September 1-3, 2024.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pahala N. Mansury conveyed this after attending a meeting with the president at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday to discuss the handling of monkeypox (Mpox) and preparations for the IAF in Bali.

Mansury said the president asked for proper preparation for the event, starting from the arrival of participants to the implementation of health protocols.

"The president asked us to prepare (the event), including at entry points in Bali and Jakarta," he noted in a press statement after the meeting.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Mpox outbreak in the African continent as a public health emergency, which became an international concern.

"The health protocol has become our shared concern, especially since many heads of state are also present at the forum," Mansury remarked.

The 2nd IAF will be held in conjunction with the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF MSP).

To date, Mansury received confirmation of the attendance of 855 participants at the 2nd IAF.

"Approximately 1,500 delegates from various countries are also estimated to come, not only from African countries but also from other global south countries," he revealed.

Meanwhile, six heads of state from Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Ghana, Liberia, Eswatini, and Zanzibar representing Tanzania had confirmed their attendance at the 2nd IAF.

Indonesia has planned to raise four priority issues for discussion at the 2nd IAF, which focused on the economic sector with a target of business agreements of up to US$3.5 billion.

"The target for private and state-owned enterprise cooperation between Indonesia and Africa is amounting to US$3.5 billion. The current cooperation value is approaching US$3 billion," Mansury stated on August 22.

The target for business agreements is expected to cover four priority issues, namely food security, energy security, health, and critical mineral security.
