Unesa and the University of York join collaboration to integrate the curriculum of eco-literacy, which has recently gaining considerable attention in the education in Indonesia.

The curriculum of eco-literacy aims to teach students about the enviroment and to draw their attention to environmental sustainability.

In this regards, Prof. Pratiwi Retnaningdyah, Ph.D., Syafi’ul Anam, Ph.D. and Ms. Lina Purwaning Hartanti from Unesa as well as Dr. Andrzej Cirocki from the University of York and Adjunct Professor at Unesa applied for an international collaboration grant to develop pedagogical materials on environmental issues for secondary school EFL instruction.

Having secured the grant, those four leaders invited teacher educators from Unesa to a workshop on materials development, that produced a a booklet with high-quality pedagogical activities.

The booklet specifically seeks to raise secondary school students’ awareness of environmental issues through reading and speaking in English. It contains both ready-made student activities and useful guidelines for teachers about the implementation of the activities in the classrooms.

The booklet has been copyrighted and made available on the National Centre for English Language Teaching Materials Development (NCELTMAD) website at Unesa. It has been shared with The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, the Extensive Reading Association, as well as the English Teachers’ Association in Indonesia to be publicized in schools across Indonesia.

Through such materials, teachers are encouraged to develop a sense of collective responsibility to the environment, among the students.

In addition, to promote eco-literacy among secondary EFL teachers, Prof. Pratiwi Retnaningdyah, Ph.D. and Dr. Andrzej Cirocki will conduct a workshop on Promoting Eco-Literacy in English Language Teaching through Experiential Learning on 20 January 2024.

Prof. Slamet Setiawan, PhD, Director of Partnership and Information Technology at Unesa, affirms that the project on materials development is a strong evidence of the university’s commitment to international cooperation and a successful partnership with the Department of Education at the University of York since 2017.

It also shows Unesa’s substantial contribution to English language teaching as well as promoting eco-literacy and sustainable development across Indonesia.(adv)
