At least 15 children, who survived the Mount Semeru eruption in Lumajang District, East Java, received scholarships up to the high school level (SMA) from the Indonesia Integrated Islamic School Network (JSIT).
"We thank and laud all donors and volunteers, especially JSIT, for having provided educational assistance up to the high school level for 15 children, who survived the Mount Semeru eruption disaster," Deputy District Head of Lumajang, Indah Amperawati, stated here on Friday.
Amperawati remarked that the Lumajang district government was grateful that several communities from various regions in Indonesia had come forward to help communities affected by the Semeru eruption.
"The highest praises for the donors, the spirit that strengthens us, and the people affected. Education assistance really means a lot to the residents," she affirmed.
The JSIT scholarship assistance for child survivors of the Mount Semeru eruption was given to the Al Uswa Foundation in Pasirian Sub-District, Lumajang.
"I am grateful that many communities from Sabang to Merauke (meaning throughout Indonesia), all came to Lumajang to help. This has not discouraged the affected residents and even in a concerning state," she stated.
Yon Hendri, a representative from the central JSIT, remarked that the awarding of the scholarship was part of JSIT's concern.
"The assistance is a form of concern of all JSIT members throughout Indonesia for the Semeru eruption survivors, and hopefully, it would ease the burden of the Semeru hot cloud disaster impacts," Hendri stated.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Al Uswa Foundation of Lumajang District, Arif Wirdana, is optimistic that the awarded scholarship would be a source of motivation and encouragement for children.
On December 4, 2021, the 3,676-meter Mount Semeru erupted at around 1:30 p.m. local time, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) reported.
Thousands were forced to evacuate, and some children lost their parents due to the disaster.
