Jakarta, (Antara) - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are evaluating the social protection policies in Indonesia using an inclusive policy framework based on research.

LIPI's Education Research Center Head Sri Sunarti Purwaningsih explained here on Monday that the analysis criticizes the existing policies based on research.

"We are coordinating with the ministries related to social affairs, and the UNESCO will bridge (the gap) on how to formulate a social protection policy into an inclusive policy," Purwaningsih noted.

Purwaningsih pointed out that some exclusive policies took into account disabled people or those in need of special facilities.

"In future, the UNESCO will develop tools to assess whether a policy has taken into account those with special needs," Purwaningsih stated.

Chairman of Indonesia's National Committee for UNESCO Arief Rachman remarked that the analysis conducted by LIPI and UNESCO is an effort to optimize research that can serve as a basis to formulate a policy.

"This analysis includes inclusive policies to be developed in Indonesia," Rachman pointed out.

He cited several public services that had failed to take into account those with special needs, such as unavailability of stairs in public places for people with disabilities and a special room for women in places of worship.(*)
