Kutacane, SE Aceh (Antara) - Flash floods have inundated 12 villages in three sub-districts in Southeast Aceh District, Aceh Darussalam Province.

Incessant heavy rains had triggered flooding in wider areas, Risky Hidayat, coordinator of the local Search and Rescue team, stated here, Friday.

The worst-hit sub-district was Lawe Sigala Gala, which is located in a mountainous area. In this sub-district, floods affected nine villages: West Lawe Sigala, Batu Dua Ratus, Kayu Mbelin, Lawe Tua, Lawe Kesumpat, Lawe Rakat, Lawe Tua Persatuan, Lawe Tua Gabungan, and East Lawe Sigala.

In the Semadam Sub-district, the villages of Lawe Beringin Guyo and Suka Makmur were inundated.

Lawe Loning Village in the Babul Makmur Sub-district was flooded.

A total of 648 families comprising 2,476 people were affected by the flash floods, Irwan of the Southeast Aceh disaster mitigation office noted.

The displaced people were from five villages in the Lawe Sigala Gala Sub-district.

The flooding also killed two residents identified as 86-year-old Orlina boru Sitorus and one-and-a-half-year-old Terang Sitanggang and seriously damaged 420 homes, Irwan remarked.

Two command posts were set up in the Semadam Sub-district to help the flood victims.

Public facilities, such as places of worship and school buildings, were also flooded.(*)
