Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara (Antara) - Judges at an Indonesian court in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara Province, sent three Malaysians to jail for drug smuggling on Tuesday.
The two convicts named Koo Jia Jiat and Leslie Chuang Wai Nam were sentenced to 17 years in prison while Wong Ying Ching was sentenced to 16 years in jail.
Judge Didiek Jatmiko, in his verdict, said the three were found guilty of smuggling methamphetamine from Malaysia to Indonesia by hiding them in their underwear.
"The panel of judges prosecute them under article 113(2) of law 35/2009 on narcotics, in accordance with the primary indictment," Didiek said.
The three convicts were also required to pay fines totaling Rp1 billion (US$75,000).
The verdict for Wong Ying Cing was lower than that of other convicts on consideration that she was committed the crime to pay debt for her mother's medical treatment totaling RM60,000 (Rp120 million).
In addition, Didiek said Wong also has an infant, who was born while she was jailed at the West Nusa Tenggara prison.
The three Malaysians were arrested at Lombok International Airport on August 7, 2016 with 1.975 grams of methamphetamine in their underwear.(*)
