Jakarta, (Antara) - The Agricultural Ministry through its Research and Development Board launched a smartphone-based agricultural information application named Tanam (modern agricultural technology) in Bogor, West Java, on Thursday (Dec 22).
"The application helps us to increase knowledge and the ability to achieve food security. For instance, the application can provide us information on the location of onions, so we can reduce price disparity," Agricultural Minister Andi Amran stated at the launch.
The application provides information on commodities, covering production centers; land; varieties; and the providers of seeds, fertilizer, and agricultural tools.
The application also serves as an online consultation tool for farmers to get in touch with agricultural instructors, researchers, and other stakeholders.
The minister hoped the information system would improve the production of commodities, enhance farmers' welfare, and boost Indonesia's reputation as the food resources center of the Asian region.
The minister suggested that a road map for commodity production should be assembled and synergized with agricultural businesses. For instance, the production target for corn is 20 tons/hectare; paddy, 20 tons/hectare; and soybean, 5 tons/hectare.
"Such production targets should also be mentioned in the road map for other commodities," Andi noted.
Head of the Agricultural Research and Development Board M. Syakir said the application, which is available for Android systems, contains information on paddy, corn, and soybeans.
In the near future, the application will be developed for IOS-based smartphones and will contain information on other agricultural commodities, he added.(*)
