Jakarta, (Antara) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police has arrested 31 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals on charges of cyber crime syndicate in West Jakarta.

"These all began with information that foreign nationals worked near the scene," the chief of motor vehicle sub-directorate of the general crime detective directorate at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Andi Adnan said here on Thursday.

Shortly after receiving the information, the police sent officers to check the presence of the foreign nationals in Green Garden Housing in West Jakarta, he said.

Based on the result of spot investigation, the foreign nationals were believed to be a cyber crime syndicate, he said.

He said the police also ransacked an apartment in Taman Anggrek, West Jakarta, believed to be used to commit the crime.

Andi said the leader of the syndicate had recruited a number of people to commit crimes against Taiwanese nationals by claiming themselves to be law enforcement officers.

The culprits further threatened to sue victims on charges of money laundering, he said.

They later asked the victims to send a sum of money to them. Otherwise, they would bring the case to justice.

"The victims were asked to transfer a sum of money to the culprits' account in Taiwan," he said.(*)
