Jakarta, (Antara) - The Abdul Rahman Saleh Airport in Malang, East Java, was reopened on Tuesday at 8:40 a.m. local time, although Mount Bromo's volcanic activities had yet to cease, according to a natural disaster mitigation official.
Head of the Data Center and Information of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated here on Tuesday that the airport became operational again based on the Notice to Airman Number C3764/16.
"The Abdul Rahman Saleh airport is been reopened, as Mount Bromo's volcanic activities are no longer hindering its operations," Sutopo noted in a press release.
Sutopo said flight activities to and from Malang had returned to normal, as the winds were moving in the southwest direction and were not blowing volcanic ash towards the airport and its surrounding areas.
Mount Bromo's monitoring post indicated at 7 a.m. local time that the weather was bright but overcast. The wind speed was low, while the temperature hovered between nine and 20 degrees Celsius.
The airport was closed on Monday following Mount Bromo's volcano eruption, which blew ash in the southwest direction and hindered flights.
"The rain of volcanic ash around the airport forced the authority to close all flight activities, effective from 11 a.m. on Monday until 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday," Sutopo added.(*)
