Jakarta, (Antara) - The Indonesian government is encouraging the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to contribute more to its members, particularly developing nations to achieve the targets of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
"Indonesia sees many targets for SDGs related to intellectual property. Therefore, Indonesia is trying to encourage WIPO to make a concrete contribution to helping countries achieve SDGs," the acting Director of Trade, Industry, Investment and Intellectual Property Rights at the Foreign Ministry, Noorman Effendi said in a press statement released on Thursday.
He made the remarks at the opening of a brainstorming session: "WIPO Contribution to Help Achieve SDGs" here on Wednesday.
The event brought together four experts on SDGs and intellectual property, one of them being the Secretary of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property at the Law and Human Rights Ministry, Razilu.
In the early days of its establishment, WIPO only focused on protecting holders of intellectual property rights. But in 2007 Indonesia and other developing nations managed to encourage the creation of the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP), he said.
"So WIPO must also pay attention to development elements in carrying out its activities now," he said.
He further stated that one of the WIPO development programs that Indonesia has obtained is the creation of the Industrial Property Automation System (IPAS) for the administration of a brand, industrial design and patent.
Meanwhile, the Director of Development, Economy and the Environment at the Foreign Ministry, Toferry P. Soetikno said WIPO can play an intermediary role in attaining SDGs and cooperate with other organizations in helping achieve SDGs.
"It is time for WIPO to make SDGs a topic for in-depth discussion," he said.(*)
