Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - The Surabaya City egislative Assembly (DPRD) is drafting a bylaw on the licensing and supervision of expatriates employed in the East Java provincial capital.

The draft bylaw, if passed into becoming a bylaw, will prevent Surabaya from the onslaught of expatriates, and will lay a legal basis for the Surabaya city government to supervise licensed expatriates, the Chief of the Council's bylaw-making body, M Machmud said on Thursday.

"The process of drafting the bylaw has reached the phase of academic study. The body is trying to accommodate ideas from a number of experts to serve as reference to draft the bylaw," he said.

The Surabaya city government and legislative council had last year issued a bylaw regarding fees for extended permits for employing foreign workers.

Administratively, the control of expatriates is done when permits to employ expatriates are extended.

The Surabaya city government has so far conducted an intensive sweep targeting illegal expatriates. (*)
