Sampang, E Java (Antara) - Floods caused by spilling of Kalikemuning river, have spread to wider areas in Sampang, Madura Island, East Java Province, since Friday morning.

"Right now, the floodwaters reached a height of up to one meter, or even to 1.5 meter," Mahrus Miyanto, a local resident, said here, Saturday.

Sampang inhabitants have anticipated bigger flooding as tidal waves have occurred since almost midnight on Friday.

A number of roads in the city were submerged at a height of between 30 cm and 40 cm, he added.

Sampang is located below sea level therefore the city is often hit by tidal floods.

The current flooding is the second one in February, as earlier this month floods inundated thousands of houses and killed one inhabitant in Sampang.(*)
