Paris, France, (Antara) - The Indonesian and French governments ended a three-year joint cooperation between the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and Meteo France International on the development of an information system for early warning on extreme weather.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and President of Meteo France Patrick Benichou signed a memorandum to end the project on the sidelines of the climate summit in Le Bourget, Paris, on Tuesday (Dec. 1).
Retno said the cooperation was initiated when she was the director general of Europe and America in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2012.
"I hope this cooperation would not just end, but there will be a subsequent beneficial cooperation for the development of a weather information system in Indonesia, which should adapt to climate change," she emphasized.
Benichou said the cooperation that lasted between 2012 and 2015 had recorded successes in the field of weather information service.
"Especially in developing information systems that are used in a variety of sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, and transportation," he pointed out.
The services include information on daily weather forecast, rain intensity forecast, information on hotspots, and land and forest fires indicating hotspots.
The information services focused on early warning systems for bad or extreme weather, such as heavy rains and strong winds.(*)
