Nganjuk, E Java (Antara) -- Three people were killed by a falling tree at Sedudo Waterfalls in the East Java provincial district of Nganjuk, a spokesman for the Regional Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) said.

"Two of the dead victims were residents of Surabaya, while the remaining one was from Tulungagung," the head of the provincial BPBD, Sukoyono, stated here on Tuesday.

A tree 30 centimeters in diameter fell unexpectedly from a height of 90 meters from a hill, precisely where visitors were bathing in the water.

As the tree and stones fell from the hill at great speed, the tourists failed to save themselves.

Moreover, dozens of others suffered severe and minor injuries, he noted, adding that the victims were treated at Bhayangkara Hospital.

Decades ago, a similar incident of a falling tree had occurred in the same location, but the local government has yet to come to a decision on closing the site to tourists. (*)
