Bondowoso (Antara Jatim) - Mount Raung in the regency of Bondowoso in East Java exploded on Sunday night spitting out flames, the district office of the Regional Disaster Control Agency (BPBD) said.
Hendrik Widotono, an official of the district office of BPBD, said the explosion was heard in the sub-district of Pujer, around 20 kilometer from the volcano.
Thick cloud came following the explosion blanketing the city of Bondowoso, Hendrik said early on Monday.
The flames could also be seen from the Senggoh volcano observation center in the regency of Banyuangi, he added.
He said the 3,332 meter high volcano began to show activities since June 24 , 2015 with flames spouting out from the peak.
"On Sunday morning the volcano roared spewing volcanic ashes to spread over wider area of the village of Gunosari, in the sub-district of Tlogosari, and a number of other villages in the sub-district of Sumber Waringin," he said.
The district authorities including the BPBD, police and the military held coordination to remain on the alert and monitor the volcanic activities.
"The people were told to remain quite and received only official information from the district authorities," Hendrik said.
The people were also warned not to come closer than 2 kilometers from the angry volcano as it could be dangerous for them. (*)
