Jakarta (Antara) - Nine political party factions in the Parliament have approved the appointment of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as new police chief, stated Chairman of the Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) Aziz Syamsuddin.
"After listening to the views expressed by the nine political party factions present in the meeting, we approved the appointment of Budi Gunawan who was proposed by President Joko Widodo in his letter, by acclamation," Syamsuddin remarked here on Wednesday.
The nine factions agreed to appoint Budi Gunawan as the new police chief and dismiss the current police chief, General Sutarman, he noted.
Commissioner General Budi Gunawan expressed gratitude for the Commission III's approval and promised to work hard and devote his services to the public.
Earlier, Budi Gunawan, the sole candidate proposed by the Indonesian president for the post of national police chief, informed legislators about his commitment to develop anti-corruption culture in the police institution.
"My first commitment is developing anti-corruption culture within the police institution," he informed the lawmakers from the Commission III overseeing law and human rights.
Despite being announced as a suspect in a corruption case by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday, Budi Gunawan's fit and proper test was conducted for filling the post of national police chief.
Gunawan further expressed commitment to carry forward his predecessor's programs, defend the supremacy of law and legal certainty in law enforcement, and handle cases transparently and responsibly.
Budi Gunawan was named a suspect in a corruption case for allegedly receiving bribes through a suspicious transaction on Tuesday.
"Commissioner General BG (Budi Gunawan) has been named suspect for allegedly receiving commitments when he headed the Police Headquarters' Career Planning Bureau in 2003-2006 and other posts in the police," KPK Chairman Abraham Samad stated. (*)
