Malang, E Java (Antara) - Eight figures have received Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Awards in recognition of their contribution to the development of the country's second largest Islamic organization.
The awards were conferred on the eight figures at the commemoration of the university's golden jubilee here on Sunday.
The seven awardees are former Muhammadiyah chairman Prof Dr Ahmad Syafii Maarif, former education minister and former religious affairs minister Dr H.A Malik Fadjar, chief of daily development board of University of Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta (UMY) Drs H.A Rosyad Sholeh and former UMY rector Ir H.M Dasron Hamid.
The others are Prof Dr Siti Chamamah Soeratno, professor of Gadjah Mada University and chief of the Aisyiyah executive board for the 2000-2010 period, Drs Muchlas Abror, chief of Muhammadiyah for the 2005-2010 period and Dra Elyda Jazman, chief of Aisyiyah executive board for the 1985-2000 period, and Prof Dr Amien Rais, reform figure.
UMM Rector Prof Dr Muhadjir Effendy said the eight figures have extraordinary achievement in building the nation particularly Muslims.
They had set a good example to the younger generations in all aspects of life, including education, politics and women empowerment, he said.
"Furthermore, they also deserve to serve as models for the younger generations who have begun to lose exemplary figures," he said. (*) Reporting by Endang Sukarelawati
