Surabaya, E Java (Antara) - The Surabaya chapter of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) will hold a tournament for an Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) cup from September 9 to 13.
The event which will bring together 450 shuttlers from 22 badminton clubs in the city serves as a means to select the best athletes in the face of the East Java badminton tournament to be held in October, chief of the PBSI chapter Abdul Chodir said here on Monday.
"To date, there are 29 badminton clubs registered at the PBSI chapter in Surabaya. Of the total, 22 have confirmed participation in the event. They include four big clubs, Jaya Raya Suryanaga, Hi-Qua Wima, Surya Baja, and Citra Raya Unesa," he said.
Jaya Raya Suryanaga will send a 90-strong squad and Hi-Qua Wima will field more than 30 shuttlers to the five-day event, he said.
The tournament is divided into 16 events.
This time the KONI tournament is combined with the Surabaya city tournament for a budget retrenchment reason.
"Through this tournament we want to select potential athletes to take part in the city training camp in the face of the Provincial Sports Week 2015 to be held in Banyuwangi," he said. (*)
