Jakarta (Antara) - The government has finally raised the sugar reference price (HPP) of white crystal sugar from Rp8,250 to Rp8,500 per kg, according to Trade Minister, Muhammad Lutfi. "The reference price of sugar is raised to provide incentive to farmers so that they will be encouraged to plant more sugar cane," the minister said in a written statement received here, Saturday. The increase in the HPP of white sugar is regulated through the Trade Minister's decree No. 45/M-DAG/PER/8/2014. The increase in white sugar prices, are expected to help the farmers and increase their productivity, Lutfi said. "However, HPP increase is not the only instrument that could be used to improve the welfare of farmers. The other instruments for improving the welfare of sugar cane farmers are increasing the sucrose content of their sugar cane products and revitalizing sugar cane factories," the minister said. (*)
