Jakarta (Antara) - To support the realization of the millennium development goals (MDGs), 32 youth belonging to both genders with a background in health and non-health education were selected as members of "Pencerah Nusantara" or Archipelago Lightening program. "They are selected from 1,024 applicants who registered online from the entire region," Chairman of Archipelago Lightening Diah Saminarsih stated here on Thursday. Pencerah Nusantara is a cross-cutting program, which is initiated and implemented by the special office of the presidential envoy for MDGs (KUKPRI). Currently, the program is entering its third year. The selected youth will undergo a six-week intensive training before being deployed to their respective areas of assignment. Diah remarked that this third generation is different as compared to the previous generation, in which the first one was a pioneer that created programs with the community. Meanwhile, the second generation has focused on continuing the programs and community empowerment whereas the third generation has the duty to ensure that the community is ready to be independent in solving problems and improving health. The Archipelago Lightening program's team members carry out activities that are curative, promotive, preventive, and educative. The team members also make an advocacy for the community, build relationships and coordinate among health center staff members, the administration, and every partner to ensure the sustainability of the programs. The team members will be assigned in several areas such as Central Sulawesi, East Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, West Java, East Java, and West Sumatra. In each region, there will be one team that comprises professional doctors, nurses, midwives, and health advocates who will work for a period of one year. (*)
